Changing the world, one child at a time

Welcome to Amherst Montessori School!

Founded in 1970, Amherst Montessori School is an accredited independent school serving approximately 85 children ages 18 months to 12 years.  AMS is dedicated to nurturing children’s innate love of learning and preparing them to succeed in all aspects of their life in the twenty-first century.

By following true Montessori principles, Amherst Montessori School offers a competitive academic curriculum adapted to each child, a supportive environment that builds the growth of self-confidence and independence, and a community that nurtures a child’s spirit by demonstrating a respect for others and a celebration of diversity.  AMS's curriculum integrates core knowledge areas with Spanish, the arts, and the world beyond the classroom walls.  Following Montessori philosophy, AMS contains bright, cheery classrooms with easy access to the outside environment, a full array of Montessori didactic materials so that each child is challenged at his or her level, and certified lead teachers or “guides.” The children in each classroom fall across a two- or three-year age span that helps each child develop leadership skills, intrinsic motivation, and a sense of community.

AMS's adherence to core Montessori tenets and the quality of its educational and administrative staff ensure that each child fosters the collaborative, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills necessary to succeed in the new century.
